Speaker 2: OTAN, Outreach and Technical Assistance Network.
Katrina Tamura: Hello and welcome to everyone at home and here in the lab. Today, we're going to be looking at Buncee, which is a tool that we can use. It's a web-based tool. And we're going to take a look at what it can do, and you are going to actually try to use this. So you're going to-- I'm going to give you a username and password. And you're going to log in and create a Buncee board.
My name is Katrina Tamura. I'm an ESL teacher from MiraCosta College and Palomar College. I teach non-credit ESL. I have a QR code on the screen there. You can scan that to get this presentation. I did create the presentation on Buncee so you could see what it looks like as an alternative to Google Slides.
OK. [laughs] Let's see if I can go here. And we're back again All right. So first, I want to find out who you are, what you teach, and where you teach. So if we can have our online participants, go ahead and type into chat, and in the room--
Speaker 3: I'm Virginia Alona. I do the HiSET, [ INAUDIBLE ]
Katrina Tamura: OK. And how about you?
Speaker 4: Hi, I'm Katrina Oh from LAUSD. I teach ESL.
Katrina Tamura: OK, all right, great.
Speaker 5: So far from online, we've got two people. Sheri Decker from Mt. Diablo Adult Education. [ INAUDIBLE ] I'm sorry.
Katrina Tamura: OK.
Speaker 5: OK. Let's start with Anita. Anita Mikhail, she's with the [ INAUDIBLE ] Adult Ed ESL. I hope I said that correctly. Please share presentation as a link. I will, OK. And then let's go down. Anymore there? Yeah, and Sheri-- Sheri Decker from Mt. Diablo Adult Education, CTE, dental assisting. And those not-- sorry, you guys, if I'm massacring your name. And Celeste, and she's an ESL teacher. Francisca Polaris, Jennifer Jefferson, Adults,
Katrina Tamura: OK. Well, welcome--
Speaker 5: Oh, one more, sorry.
Katrina Tamura: Oh, go ahead, go for it.
Speaker 5: And DP for California College of ESL Communication.
Katrina Tamura: All right. Well, I'm glad to see everyone here. I know my colleague, Kristi Reyes, is here also. I know her, so she doesn't introduce herself. [chuckles] So we're going to take a look here. Let me see. I'm sorry, I'm new to the whiteboard system here.
So I want to know first, what is your favorite integrated skills tech tool? What really works for you to combine different skills you want to help your students to learn and to produce? What do you like to use?
And those of you at home, please type it into chat for us. How about over here? What kind of integrated skills tool do you use or do you use one yet? Yeah?
Speaker 6: Are we talking about any online tool?
Katrina Tamura: Anything, online tool, what works for you?
Speaker 6: I use Quizlet.
Katrina Tamura: Quizlet, OK.
Speaker 6: Sometimes Padlet.
Katrina Tamura: Padlet let, OK, yeah. All right. And what skills are you targeting when you use those?
Speaker 6: I guess Quizlet, just practicing vocabulary. And Padlet, going to be write, could be their writing skill.
Katrina Tamura: OK.
Speaker 6: Yeah.
Katrina Tamura: Very good. And how about you? Do you--
Speaker 7: I haven't.
[interposing voices]
Katrina Tamura: You're looking for something new. Good, because this is going to be the best one. Anyone want to do this?
Speaker 5: Online, we've got Ruth. And she uses Multimeter and Google Jamboard. Cindy uses Jamboard, Padlet, and Kahoot. And Araceli uses Kahoot. Eusebia, Edpuzzle, Kahoot, Blook--
Katrina Tamura: Blooklet?
Speaker 5: Is it-- yeah, it's B-L-O-O-K-E-T.
[interposing voices]
Speaker 5: Nice. And Zoom Polls, Cindy says. Oh, and Araceli, Interactive Google Slides. Oh, my gosh, the chat so active. Oh, Ruth says, sorry, I meant Mentimeter. And then Emilia says Quizlet in vocab, Kahoot, Quizizz-- Francisca, Kahoot, Karen, Games to Learn English.
Katrina Tamura: All right, lots of tools out there. Kristi, what do you use but limit to just five instead of--
Speaker 7: Oh, just the Google Slides.
[laughter]
Katrina Tamura: All right. So this is just another one that you can use. And I want to take you through it and explain to you what it does, how you can use it, and how your students can use it because it's not a one-sided thing. You can use it. But then your students can also get their hands on it and start using it for their productive practice.
So let's see. So how many of you have ever used it? Have you touched Buncee before? First time you've heard of it? Online, have you heard of it before?
Speaker 8: I think I heard of it before.
Katrina Tamura: You've heard of it before?
Speaker 8: Before, by that we meant just vague memory.
Katrina Tamura: Yeah, during the pandemic, it was really nice because they were giving out free accounts for teachers to help people with remote learning and getting information and activities out to students.
Speaker 5: I have one more, Sheri uses Zoom and Quizlet. Sheri-- but also they're saying that they-- most of them have never used it, never heard of it. Heard about it but not used it. So that's the common thing.
Katrina Tamura: All right.
Speaker 8: Does that mean it's not free anymore?
Katrina Tamura: It is not free anymore. But sometimes they do have free trials, so you could look for that. I use it, and it's been about $10 a month. It depends on how much you use it if it's really worth it, too. I really like it because I use it so much, because my students enjoy it. And so you really have to try it out and see if it's anything that would be useful for you.
All right. So what is Buncee? It's a creation and communication tool for students, educators, and administrators to create interactive content, allowing those of all ages to visualize concepts and communicate creatively. So I use this with my adult learners. But I also use it with my children.
So giving them a chance to create if they have an assignment or something like that, and they want to-- a book report or they just want to create and send out an interactive greeting card or something. So there's lots of ways we can use this.
So today, we're going to discuss how Buncee boards can be used. And we'll learn about developing and sharing materials and course information using a Buncee board. And we'll learn about how students can use Buncee.
And you can experience it by building and sharing a basic Buncee board. So that's our main goal, is for you to actually create one yourself. And then you'll try building a Buncee and share it with me. So I'll teach you how to do it, show you how to do it. And then you will try it yourself.
So there are multiple ways to use Buncee. You can use it to deliver multimedia presentations with access to materials links like stickers, animations, shapes, drawings, 360 images, photos, documents, audio, video, QR codes, and hyperlinks. So you can put it all in there and then send them a link, and they get all of their materials all in one spot.
Speaker 8: Question.
Katrina Tamura: Yes?
Speaker 8: So does this all-- all these features are already in Buncee?
Katrina Tamura: It's already in Buncee. And that's what's really nice, is because you don't have to go to many multiple places. A lot of times, you can get the images and videos and everything right there. So I'm going to show you some examples of that, that are useful.
You can create a dynamic news board with real-time updates. So once you send the link, you can-- maybe you have a message board for your students. And they like to check it every day. They use the same link, click in. And the information may be updated. This is nice for even workplaces amongst teachers.
If you have news and updates, you just click it and it updates all the information or the homework assignments for today or something like that. Instead of sending an entire file and like a slide-- slide show and they're going to save it into their Google account or something, this is-- you just click on it. You see the updated information, it doesn't have to be stored anywhere. They just need the link.
And you can assign multimedia reading response projects. That's one idea. So they can-- I'm going to show you an example of that. And it can be from very low levels to very high levels, depending on your student group and your needs, where they can add images and videos. They can make videos of themselves talking about the text that they read.
And you can manage student projects and promote engagement in Buncee classroom because Buncee actually has a classroom you can build for your students. You can add them to a class, and then they can share their slides with you, their Buncees with you.
And you can give them feedback. You can give them reactions-- thumbs up, smiley face, hearts. So you can do that too. And you can create entry and exit tickets with the Buncee board.
Let's see. Also, I wanted to note here, they have a little site. It's called the Buncee Ideas Lab. So you can visit that site for more, just Buncee Idea Lab. And people share their slides in their Buncees so you can get an idea of how to use it.
So this works well for multiple class formats and student groups. Teachers have several ways to create learning opportunities. And students have a variety of ways to interact with and respond to class materials.
It can be individualized and adaptive. It does have text-to-voice, an immersive reader option, images, different colors, text sizes, fonts. It has audio and video inserts. And this can be for blended learning, language learning, flipped learning, differentiated learning. And let's see.
OK. So what can I do with it exactly? I'm going to show you one example. I was working on describing people using adjectives. Describe yourself. Describe another person. And this was for beginning conversation ESL students.
And so this is one board I made. This could be easily shared on to by text, by email. But I posted it inside my Canvas, of course. So it can be embedded.
Speaker 5: I was just going to ask you if it was Canvas compatible.
Katrina Tamura: Yes, it's a Canvas compatible.
Speaker 5: So you can embed the-- oh, well, sorry.
Katrina Tamura: Yeah. And so let's see. Let me show you the next page here. [ INAUDIBLE ] So what I did here, I gave them the instructions. And then I created a person, this person named Melanie.
In Buncee, you can type "people" into the search. And then they'll give you a lot of different kinds of people, many, many different people. So I picked this lady, and I called her Melanie. We're working on the simple present tense describing things with adjectives.
So this is Melanie. She's 30 years old. She has long brown hair and dark brown eyes. She is tall and skinny. She is friendly and enjoys being around other people. Now, that's great. I can read it to them in class. But I also could embed it.
[audio playback]
- This is Melanie. She is 30 years old. She--
[end playback]
The Immersive Reader, and it's going to read the instructions.
[audio playback]
- To play the audio, click the word "Listen" below.
This is Melanie. She is 30 years old. She has long brown hair and dark brown eyes.
[end playback]
OK. So my students, again, if they don't like that voice-- it's too fast, whatever-- they can make it a male. And they can make it really fast or really slow if they just-- it's going too fast for them.
[audio playback]
- Eyes. She is tall and skinny. She is friendly and enjoys being around other people.
[end playback]
OK. And then if I want to focus-- if the students are-- just want to hear that word-- again, it's going too fast as a whole. So they want to listen to each individual word.
[audio playback]
- Friendly.
[end playback]
So it gives them a lot of support. And this [ INAUDIBLE ] happens. You make the board. And this portion is there, which is really nice, I think, to have access to for both. It saves me time and also gives my students the opportunity to study in an immersive way.
Speaker 9: Quick question.
Katrina Tamura: Mm-hmm.
Speaker 9: With the "friendly," those images came up. Is that just automatic?
Katrina Tamura: That's automatic, mm-hmm. That's automatic. So I made-- like here's Gilberto, so they can listen again to my voice. They can go to the word, "goatee." It doesn't have an image, so it's--
[audio playback]
- Goatee.
[end playback]
That's me. Some of them have the images.
[audio playback]
- Eyes.
[end playback]
So these are ones that they might go back to and they want to hear it again. I was able to make quite a diverse collection of people to describe just by looking through Buncee people. And I could make a little quiz here. This doesn't go anywhere.
So this isn't something where when they answer the questions, they'll be reported to you. This is purely for practice for them at home. If you want to do the evaluation, then maybe set up a different Canvas quiz or something. But this is for them to listen. They click the listening cue here.
[audio playback]
- I study ESL.
[end playback]
[side conversation]
I think it's some people at home. [chuckles] All right. And let's see. There's more quizzes. So I just set up more quizzes for them. So they-- all right. So let's take a look at another kind here. I'm going to need to exit this, I think.
[ INAUDIBLE ]
I'm using this really cool whiteboard in this room. And there's a little learning curve. [laughs]
OK. So the next one I want to show you is a little less involved. It's not me making something but a student. And I'm actually-- because I didn't have permission to share my students-- I didn't ask anyone-- I had my son do it.
[laughter]
This is my son's. I don't like to share things if I haven't asked permission. So this is-- you can get to know people. They can create, identify where they live on a map. He took a picture. You can take a picture of yourself in Buncee. And then he posted it, where he lives.
He could also-- instead of a picture, he could create a video file directly into Buncee and record himself talking about who he is, where he's from. So that's another idea there. Let's try to see--
Speaker 4: I have a question
Katrina Tamura: Yes.
Speaker 4: If they're recording their story, introduce yourself, it's going to be one Buncee slide with all the students, having everybody in one Buncee slide?
Katrina Tamura: No, so this is not-- we're so used to Google Slides, where everybody is ever going on to one. This is going to be individual. So they're not-- everybody creates their own. But then they can share it to a common board. So they could share their slide to a board.
Let's see where is the room. OK, sorry. Again, we're at the front page here. All right.
So here's another one-- not that one. But here's a class project board. So after they create their boards, whatever their activity is, then they can share it to a classroom board. And then other students can read or interact with their board and then give them reactions. They can give them thumbs up. They can make comments on them.
So in this particular class, they were talking about their childhood. So they made a story about their childhood and then posted it to a common board. So-- uh-huh?
Speaker 5: I have a question here.
Katrina Tamura: Yes.
Speaker 5: Online audience. That's really cool, by the way. Karen asks, do students use the teacher's account?
Katrina Tamura: Yes. So once the teacher creates an account, you can create a class. And then you can share the code with others.
Speaker 5: May I ask the question, how many seats do they have per class? Is there a limit?
Katrina Tamura: There is a limit. Per class, it's not. But I think it's overall users. I think it's probably something like a hundred. I haven't come up with a big problem. I may be using maybe 26 accounts at a time. And you can just delete it after--
Speaker 9: If they're not active or something. They're not active or--
Katrina Tamura: Yeah. This is similar to Classroomscreen. And this is where you can post all of your activities on a board and then share it with them. So you could-- if you want your students to open up Buncee and then access a board that you've created for them, and then go-- or open their emails in the computer lab, and then go to different activities that you have waiting for them, so this is another way.
And then you can record directly into your board and use a Buncee to send video message to-- I should say your students. But I want to get you into Buncee right now so that you can really see. So I want you to go to Buncee.com. And your username is going to be "2023." And I have created a simple login, which is penguin, starfish.
So you're going to go to Buncee.com. And then log in. Don't try to create a student account. You don't need to. You can just enter "2023" for your username. And then use the simple login.
Speaker 9: Penguin and starfish?
Katrina Tamura: Penguin, starfish. Now, I really like this simple login because you can create different usernames for each student, which is what you want to do. Today, I'm doing the same one for everyone because I don't know everyone is going to be here.
Speaker 8: So if I click starfish penguin, it's going to be the same result? Is there a certain order? Penguin, starfish or starfish--
Katrina Tamura: Penguin, starfish.
Speaker 8: Has to be in that order?
Katrina Tamura: Yeah, it has to be in that order. But they don't have to remember it. They don't have to enter long emails or complicated codes or anything. They can just use the visual to access it because I noticed a lot of people who aren't used to this kind of stuff, it's really frustrating just opening the door.
So this is really, really nice to use. So hopefully, did our people at home in and able to get into Buncee? Give me a thumbs up maybe?
Speaker 5: Yes.
Katrina Tamura: Yes, OK. OK, good. Good.
Speaker 5: Yup, yup.
Katrina Tamura: Yay. OK.
Speaker 5: A lot of them saying yes.
Katrina Tamura: OK. So let me move this, see if I can move this. OK, good. Yes, there we go.
So what you're going to do is click on Create a New Buncee. Create a New Buncee. And you see that they have a lot-- they do have templates. Awards, Recognition-- for example, if you're making a certificate or something, Back To School, Birthday Greetings, Bookmarks, Brochures-- lots of different ways you can use this. They have different categories.
But we're just going to do, Start from scratch. So click on Start from scratch. And one of the first things you might want to do is change the background. So if you just click on change the background, right in the middle. You can pick lots of different scenes.
If you don't like the background you changed or you chose, you can click on Change background. And you can scroll through-- oops, I keep touching it. [chuckles] Better use my keyboard. You can scroll through and they have lots of different-- you can just use a color or you can use an image.
I'm going to use this beach scene. And then I'm going to click Add to This Page. If you click Add to All Pages, it'll continue the background scene for each one.
Speaker 5: Hey, Trina.
Katrina Tamura: Yes?
Speaker 5: More people are having some problem getting on. One says-- she's like, sorry, I'm not in. No confirmation email received?
Katrina Tamura: You don't need to set up an account. So don't try to set up a student account now. Just go to Buncee.com and then enter the username "2023." and then use the simple login, penguin, starfish.
Speaker 5: The woman that said that, Anita, she just got in.
Katrina Tamura: OK, great, great, great.
Speaker 5: And there's one more question that concern that. Sorry, it's-- [ INAUDIBLE ] has said, it is not opening for me when I click Create Buncee. So maybe she was trying to create an account, too.
Katrina Tamura: So don't--
Speaker 5: I should go ahead and go on and on.
Katrina Tamura: Yeah, OK, all right, OK. And then you can see on one side of your screen, you have the pages. And then on the other side, you have this plus sign. Plus is adding an item. So you can click on the Add Item, and you get all of these different choices. You can add, you can upload something. You can create a QR code.
So why don't you just create a QR code? Just click on it. And then look, oh, that was so easy. It's a QR code to your presentation to your board. What could be easier? And then you add-- try another one, Add. Let's try to add a Buncee Animation.
So you see the little bunny rabbit, you click on the bunny rabbit. And you can look through-- and you can look for something specific or you can just pick something that they have there. I'm going to use the sun because it's appropriate for my scene.
And you can see it has a little-- it's moving. That's what Buncee animation is. It's going to be like a sticker, an animated sticker. You can click Add again. You can use Buncee 3D. There's lots of different things here.
I'm going to try to add maybe fish. I'm going to look for fish. So I'm going to type "fish" in and enter-- no, nothing found. Let me see. How about "ocean?" Nothing, hmm. Let me go close this one and open this. I'm going to click on Animation again since they don't have the 3D I want.
So I'm going to try "fish." You have to enter. And then you'll find the different sea creatures. I'll choose an octopus. And once you select it, you should see a little blue frame come around the item that you've selected. And then you can add it to your scene.
Uh-oh, my octopus is going to be a little out of water. It's OK. And then we can add something else, try a Buncee Message, see what a Buncee Message does here. I'm going to click That's awesome, or I love you, or you can search for a specific phrase.
Try another one. Let's see. You can draw, add shapes, text. You can look for a YouTube channel. They have Khan Academy in here. So they have videos from Khan Academy, Khan Academy Kids. NASA, National Geographic Kids, TED, TED Ed, The Met. Let's see TED Ed.
Speaker 8: I have a question.
Katrina Tamura: Yes.
Speaker 8: Can I upload any YouTube video I have a link to here or not, only the ones I can see on the--
Katrina Tamura: No, you can upload-- you can take a link and then do the-- use Upload a Link feature there. So here, I typed in "happiness" because I want to find a video on happiness to add to my scene.
Of course, I'm going to re-- going to listen to these before I insert them, not just trust them. And I'll add it. And there you go, it's inside my board. That was easy. If I want to add a specific video from YouTube and I want to just use the link, then I can import a URL.
I could upload a video myself. I could record a video. We could click on Record and depending-- I'm not sure if allow it. Let's see. So of course, because I'm on this main board, it's not working well to add the video right now. But for you, record yourself.
So it is finally loading here. But it's going to take a little long, so I'm going to not do that right now. But you can record directly into it and leave a message. You can take a photo. You can add emojis.
And so I want you to go ahead and just play with it for a minute. You can add arrows, crosshairs, sine wave, cosine, graph, signs. Explore it a little bit. And there's just lots up here to work with. But it does take a while to kind of explore it all because there is so much of it.
You can add text. So we're going to do that really quick, so we can leave our names. So make sure to add your name. So I'm going to click on Text. And it does come with a lot of different text options.
The text is down here. It's down at the bottom of the screen. You're going to double click Add Text. I have-- let's do it on over here.
Speaker 5: Do you ever have this where students start editing someone else's--
Katrina Tamura: No, because-- oh, because you know why? We're all using the same account. That's why. Create your own. But you can add your name. So I'm going to add my name, Katrina Tamura, MiraCosta College.
So I'm just going to, for example, add some text. And then I want to change the font. So I just need to highlight the font or highlight the text. Well, for some reason, I can't on this computer. But you can-- there's lots of different fonts. You can choose Abril Fatface, Acme, all of these. There's tons of them that you can use.
And your students will enjoy creating their own presentations and having this selection here. This is really a nice selection of creative fonts unless you're working on something and you-- of course, you want to choose the most accessible font. But your students, if they're making a project about themselves, they might want to show a little personality and pick a font that feels like themselves.
You can duplicate a page if you want to copy the page, down at the bottom. You can duplicate it. So then there's two. If you want to add a page, you just click Add. And you can do a Blank New Page. Or you can stitch in a page.
Stitching is if you have created multiple Buncees and you want content from one Buncee but you don't want to have to recreate the whole thing. You can click Add the Stitching. If I do Add Stitching, then I can find all of these other boards that I've made. And I can select pages from them to add
Speaker 5: We have a lot of questions right now.
Katrina Tamura: Sure.
Speaker 5: Sheri asks, where are the pages saved?
Katrina Tamura: The pages are saved inside your-- this is a cloud account. So even though you can't work-- like people are not-- you have separate accounts. If each person has a different username, then it's not going to-- each page will be saved in your student account, at the account under your username, which is under your teacher.
So I don't see your boards because you're going to have to share it with me. So this is mine. It's just automatically saved here, just like a Google Slide or a Google Doc. But other people aren't going to have access to it. So you are going to want to add your name or a title as well.
And you can also see how it looks. In order to really see what it looks like, you'll go to-- oh, it's already published. So you can share it. Click on the Share button. And this is how you're going to be able to share it with me.
So I want you to take a look at the different options for sharing. We have-- you can just share it with a code. You can embed it. So you could embed this into something like Canvas. But then you need to make sure you put it in an appropriate size. Or you can add the link. You can share it with Buncee users.
So this is just other people outside of Buncee. This is within your class. So I want you to click on that one, From your Class. And then you'll look for the sections. You are going to see OTAN TDLS 2023. So that's the class that I created for you.
And then you will select OTAN TDLS, and you're going to share it. So then it's shared. You can share it by email. You can share it to a board that your teacher has set up for you. You can share it as an email-- you can request an RSVP to know that people have seen it-- social media sites, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Teams, LinkedIn. You can download it.
So this is-- you can use this feature to make banners for your Canvas courses. They have a setting where you can put it to banner size. And then you can create a banner and then just download it as a png file. And then you can also use those in your Google Slides if you wanted to. Mm-hmm?
Speaker 5: Anita asks-- Amelia, I'm sorry. She said, it doesn't let you add only two animations this card?
Katrina Tamura: No, you can add as many as you want. Why don't you go ahead? I'm going to just give you a minute. You can try to add as many as you want if you want to try it a little bit more. And then share it with me.
Speaker 5: The people at chat are sharing their account . I think I would just click on it in the chat.
Katrina Tamura: Yeah, OK.
Speaker 5: There you go.
Katrina Tamura: All right. Perfect.
Speaker 5: That's cool.
Katrina Tamura: All right.
[interposing voices]
A video there, let me move the Chat a little bit-- or not.
[laughter]
So we added lots of cool stuff on there-- let me make it-- minimize it for now-- an animation, animated crab, the QR code, the moon. And then let's see. Anybody else there?
Speaker 8: I have a question.
[interposing voices]
Katrina Tamura: Shoot.
Speaker 8: So I think everybody participating in this PD, we all log in with the 2023 and the code. So what does that mean? Are we in a class of some sort? Everybody in the same login?
Katrina Tamura: Yeah, I'll show you. I think I have a few more minutes, so I'll show you how that happens, how you create the class.
Speaker 5: Oh, that's nice.
Katrina Tamura: Yeah. Oh, beautiful. And then you can pick exactly-- there's lunar eclipses, pick whatever video you want.
Speaker 5: Millions of thank you thank you.
Katrina Tamura: Nice. And then beginning others--
Speaker 5: [ INAUDIBLE ]
Katrina Tamura: OK. Let's see. Hmm. I don't see it. I'm looking for one more. There should be one more from Ruth, Ruth Wilson.
Speaker 5: It's further down.
Katrina Tamura: It's further down?
Speaker 5: Yeah, I think.
Katrina Tamura: That's it? No. I don't see it.
Speaker 5: Scroll down a little bit more?
Katrina Tamura: OK.
Speaker 5: There you go.
Katrina Tamura: Oh, Ruth. OK, here you go.
Speaker 5: I was having trouble scrolling on that.
Katrina Tamura: Yeah, yeah.
Speaker 5: I think it might be glitchy on my end.
Katrina Tamura: All right. Yay! Nice one, Ruth. OK, beautiful. So let's take a look at what I did so that you could create this board, what exactly made that possible.
I went into my teacher account. Of course, this one is the teacher account. So I have all of my Buncees I've ever created and never deleted. [chuckles] I have a ton of them. And you should see my email accounts, way worse.
[laughter]
There's lots of them in there. So I have my classes here and my boards, my Buncees. Boards are ones that are-- ones I made and people shared their items to. These are ones that students have shared with me. So they chose to share it with their teacher. So I have yours here.
[interposing voices]
If you were able to--
Speaker 5: Oh, I'm sorry--
Katrina Tamura: Oh, it's OK. So then I can open it. I could copy it and then put them together. But that's how I get my-- the classes, boards. They turn in their assignments essentially.
So the Classes right here, I have my one class, NCESL and CESL22. 19 students are logged in or have accounts. And this is our class code. When they're creating an account, they don't want to-- they're not going to be asked to pay for anything. Or they can just-- they don't really need to create an account because they already have one under me.
So what did I do to create that account? Oh, I'm sorry. I don't want to show you all everybody's names. Let's see. OK. Let me go back to Classes. That's the wrong one, OTAN TD-- OK. So I just created one, one person. So I entered the first name and the last name, OTAN TDLS, and then I decided to give you a username, which was 2023.
Now I enabled simple login. If I disable simple login, then I have to put some sort of fancy thing in there, which is nice. We can do that. But maybe just to get it started, use a simple login. So I can enable the simple login, and I can change the password images. They have lots of different little symbols here you could use.
And then let's see. I can add a student. And I can also print this student out a card. If you notice here, I have one student selected. And what my goal is to create a little card for them to carry around so they don't forget what their username and password is. So I can download this PDF.
Speaker 5: I'm sorry to interrupt you. Araceli said, how do I share again with the teacher? And then Amelia said, first step, create class, correct? So the first one is--
Katrina Tamura: Yes, first step is you create a class. Yeah, create a class.
Speaker 5: And how do I share again with the teacher?
Katrina Tamura: OK. So just really quick, this one is the PDF. And so you can cut-- when you have multiple users and you have multiple different usernames, it will have the whole page of them. So you don't have to keep coming back and creating a new one.
And let's see. Hmm.
[interposing voices]
Let's see, let's go this way. Maybe I can move this. Let's see where I am. OK. So let's go back to the Class Roster-- Dashboard. So again, go into the Classes there. And you can remove students there. You can search for students. Students can earn badges and-- that you can see how many Buncees there are. There's 10. 10 have been created on this account in the last few minutes.
All right. So let's go back to Classes-- to Buncees. And let's share that board again. So to share it, you'll go up into-- in the corner and click Share. And then you'll share with the Buncee users. And they can change these to-- Anyone With a Link, a Specific Buncee User, Only Me-- so Anyone with a Link.
You can make it so that people can comment, make comments on it. Or you can turn that function off. It can be copy-able, so other people can copy your Buncee slides. Or you can disable that.
So share with users from your class, and then you're going to look up OTAN TDLS 2023. And then share it. And then I'm going to get that into my teacher account.
Speaker 5: Thank you.
Katrina Tamura: You're welcome. All right. And if you see up here, I have some notifications. Sometimes you get little notifications-- new Buncee, rewards for how many Buncees are creating, that kind of thing. And to actually create a new class, you just click on Create a New Class. You enter a new name, a class name, new class.
I'm horrible at typing on this keyboard, sorry. Subject, you can put a subject, NCESL. And we can put other-- put the grade and then Create. And there you go. So then my class will be here. And I just look for it. And it's empty.
So I need to add some students. Again, these are going to be-- you can add as many as you want. And if you run out of spaces, then delete your old classes. So you can Add Students. Put the first and last name. And you can pick a username. No, it's already taken. Oh, man.
How about "nice?" OK. And then you can add some sort of code, like Happy12. And then you add this person. Then you just keep adding. And then you could use one-- you could set it so everybody's using the same password. So you don't have to create multiple passwords.
Or you can enable the simple login. So click there, Edit, and then Enable Simple password-- flamingo, alpaca. And then you save it. So that is how you create and share a Buncee.
Different classes will have different uses for it. Look into the videos that they have already there. The images, of course, you can always upload your own images and your own videos. You're not limited to what's in there. And does anybody have any questions or-- yes.
Speaker 8: So here, we-- everybody used the one username and password. And then so you can also create an individual one?
Katrina Tamura: Yes, you want to do that. You want to create one for each student.
Speaker 8: What is the reason?
Katrina Tamura: Why do you want to create one for each student?
Speaker 8: Yeah.
Katrina Tamura: So that-- so they can't go into each other's assignments and change the content. You want to know what that student is making, not what other people made. Each student wants to track their progress. Remember how they have badges and Buncee and submissions and all of that?
You can give them-- they can earn badges for the work that they're doing. You can see the activity of each individual student. And it's kind of hard if I were to look-- if this were not-- if this were a collection of work from many, many people and I didn't know which person created this, it would be hard for me to grade or give feedback. I'd be spending all day looking for everybody's work.
So it is-- definitely don't just create one. There's no need to. It doesn't cost you any extra. Once you have the teacher account, you can import their names. But it's highly recommended that you create a different one.
Speaker 8: On a--
Katrina Tamura: Go ahead, yeah.
Speaker 8: Is this phone friendly?
Katrina Tamura: This is very phone friendly, yes.
Speaker 8: I can have this-- we work on this one on their phones?
Katrina Tamura: Yes. You can download the app. And I often make Buncees on my phone because then I can use my phone's video camera and everything or audio. I can record audio files on my phone. For some reason, it's kind of better, easier for me to sit on my couch and do it than always be tethered to my computer.
So I can do that. I think students enjoy that, too, being able to move around. So they just download Buncee to their phone. And they log in with the username and password--
Speaker 8: That I give--
Katrina Tamura: You give them. They do not create their own account. So they shouldn't be paying for anything. It's just the teacher's account. And then you're sharing the access.
Speaker 5: There's a few questions online.
Katrina Tamura: OK.
Speaker 5: You guys you any-- do you have any more? So the first one is, how do you upload in Canvas?
Katrina Tamura: OK. So you're going to create the link. If you go to your Buncee-- and we're going to open it here and go to the sharing. And if you know how to use Canvas, if you're familiar with adding and embedding things in Canvas, all you need is the code. You can choose the link or the code, the embed code.
So you can-- it's nice sometimes on Canvas, you have the Add URL. You can add a page or you can add a URL. You can just add it, add the URL. Or you can create a page and then embed your Buncee. I like adding a link so that they can get full access to it because sometimes it's kind of boxed in in Canvas. It's accessible. You can get to it. But it's nice to have-- just see it on the browser instead.
So you just copy the embed code, and then go to Canvas, and then embed or copy, and carried over as a link. And let's see--
Speaker 5: A few more questions--
Katrina Tamura: OK, sure.
Speaker 5: Karen said the one she was working on disappeared. I don't know.
Katrina Tamura: That's one of the problems that could be because we have multiple users on there. So somebody might have accidentally deleted your Buncee. So that's also why we want to create separate accounts, then we're not accidentally deleting each other's work.
Speaker 5: And then Sheri-- Sheri said, can you upload students from ASAP or an Excel file? And then she said, I see you can do the CVS file, that's not--
Katrina Tamura: Yeah. So--
[interposing voices]
Katrina Tamura: Yeah, so you have to use the file type that they ask for. So you can do that.
Speaker 5: And I have one more.
Katrina Tamura: Sure.
Speaker 5: She asked if the teacher cost is free, but was it-- it's $10 a month?
Katrina Tamura: Last I checked, it was about $10. So look into it, they may have trials on there. I haven't looked recently to see if there's a trial version because during the pandemic, they had it. They did have free access for teachers. They had free accounts. I don't know if they're doing that right now. Everybody is kind of pulling back on their free stuff.
Speaker 5: I just looked, and it was $7 or $10.
Katrina Tamura: Yeah, it's something like that.
Speaker 5: And Karen said that when she added the title, someone else's name showed up.
Katrina Tamura: Yeah,
[interposing voices]
Speaker 5: --explain that.
Katrina Tamura: That's kind of one of the things that what's nice about Buncee as opposed to the Google Slides. We are really used to the Google Slides and the ease of doing group projects with that. But then if we are new users to this kind of technology, it might be nice to start [laughs] with our own accounts without having to create a Gmail account.
With the teacher just gives me an account, and they give me a username. They give me a password. And then I can experience this and try using all these different things that everybody else is using. The hyperlinks and QR codes and all this stuff that people are using, I don't know how to do it. Guess what, in Buncee, you can do it pretty easily. It really does take the mystery out of it until your skills are stronger.
Speaker 9: One more quick question, Katrina. Let's say you want students to do some sort of presentation and you wanted the content to be the same, could you make a template and share it to them?
Katrina Tamura: You could. And so sharing capability, it's web based. It can be accessed on any device. It can be used on a Chromebook, tablet, desktop, iOS, can be shared online or downloaded for offline viewing. And you can use it on all these different platforms.
And I attached the-- these are files, PDF files links. So you can click on those links and take a look at it. This is what it looks like when they open up their email and you've shared a Buncee by email. It's kind of cool.
Speaker 5: That is cool.
Katrina Tamura: And then if you want to send it by email, you just go back into those Share settings. And you-- it's within here, in the Share settings, anyone with it or-- anyone with a link can see it. And then on your cell phone there, you can find the Share button at the top. We're very used to this. And you can share it by text message, email, Google Docs, whatever you have on your phone. And then you click Send.
So this, again, is just reviewing what we talked about with sharing within a Buncee classroom. So you can look back at that. I know time is over. So you can just look back at this file, and it's going to go over some of the ideas and suggestions and ways we share things.
So it's all there. If you didn't to get your question answered, try looking in the slides. And you're welcome to email me. I have two email addresses. You can pick one.
[laughter]
And I'll get back to you, OK? Thank you for joining me today. And if you do have questions, let me know. OK?
