Chun Hee McMahon: I'm going to just introduce myself first. My name is Chun Hee McMahon and I'm a director of nursing education at Clovis Adult. Clovis is located in a Central Valley right next to Fresno. And my backyard is Yosemite as everybody. So any of you and visiting Yosemite give me a call so I can host you. I have a even extra a couple of extra bedrooms, so you can use that too. So I do actually have the mother-in-law room, so it comes very handy.
So this project actually, it's not just that I did it by myself, but I was a teacher for four or five years, a nursing teacher for five years before I became a director of nursing. So actually last year July 2022 and I took over the position and then I dragged two teachers who has a vision to take over my role before what I did.
So Elaine Sims is one of the teacher and she is actually a department chair for the nursing and Allied Health and then Hannah Gandy is the new teacher joined. And she is just dynamic teachers who is very interested in teaching online, as well as using all this technology.
So I just want to-- basically, I'm not teaching how to do it in this presentation, but I want to show you how I transitioned and how I started Moodle back in 2017 for pandemic. And then after the pandemic or during the pandemic the Moodle transition to Canvas.
So I just want to share the step by step that we took and maybe you can utilize that information with you and implement in your transition if you are using any LMS. But if you don't use it, no biggie because I never heard of LMS, I never heard of Moodle nor Canvas.
I knew Blackboard because when I was going City College and taking some course, they use the Blackboard. But at that time when I went to school that was in 1980 when not long after I came to America, I knew there was Blackboard, but very rare and then it's very much troublesome, so we didn't use a whole lot.
But later on and I heard that worked really good it was competitor of the Moodle. But I begin with the Moodle because adult education provided Moodle for free at that time. So we started a Moodle and even though I never heard and then I started taking my master's program, and I had to use this Moodle, so I exposed to Moodle very short time as students.
So that's why I said, wow, I think I'm going to implement Moodle. That was in 2017, I had no clue that pandemic could have happened. But we were very comfortable using it Moodle after I started it. I'm the only one use the Moodle at the time 2017 when I created all the courses and I started engaging other teachers, hey, how convenient it is that once you set up the class in an online base, which very first I started with the camp, not camp, but my own website.
I created my own website and then I moved to Google Classroom, Google, and then it's Moodle. So the Moodle is my third generation. For as far as I can consider that, online started in the Moodle. And I want to just give you the background of our Clovis Adult Education story and also what programming.
We do have academic. We teach ESL, English, math, and all the GED part, even special ed. But I'm only focusing CTE program because we do have CTE business section and then we also have a CTE in nursing in Allied.
And I'm only in charge of nursing in Allied program, but we do have a CTE business who work with me. So the CTE business chair is the one who started teaching us how to use a Moodle very first. So she was my mentor. And then she started playing with Canvas freebies.
So we're going to-- I'm going to just-- what program we offer in Clovis is medical assistant front office. We used to have a back office, but we closed. The member of students was very low. So we only kept the front office program and then the administrative assistant program. So it's six to 12 months program, sure. But students, I don't think not nearly as many as nursing program we have. And I will introduce that in a minute.
So I was CTE nursing and Allied health program teaches LVN program. We have all course, each core has between 30 to 45 students. So that means each year twice enrollments going up. So you can tell about 120 to 40 students in the Canvas. And so one comes in, one graduate. So always it's a full rotating, but it is a program of 18 months.
So I have to design not in 12 months at a time, I have to design 18 months. So it's a little different. It's a little more complicated than going by 12 months at a time. So LVN we have CNA a program. So we call NA program. The reason we call NA is before they certificate it, they are still in a nurse aid. But once they are certificate it, then we call CNA.
And that we have part timers, four hours, four days, and then about three months. So it's a 12 to 13 months. Each cohort can hold-- we have AM program and PM program, each cohort 30. So that's a 30 students, 30 students, 60 at a time and then it rolls it three times a year. Yeah, so that's, again, 120 and almost 180 students can go through our programs.
And then Home Health Aide, we have-- right after CNA program, we offer Home Health Aide. It's a 40-hour program with NA certification. So that tells if it's all 30 students in the AM and all 30 students PM sign up, there's 60 students who will be signing up for the HHA, but most unlikely in that 100%. Just they want to be a CNA so that about half of those will sign up HHA.
But those are students who does HHA, I give them a credit for taking those course and NA course when they come into LVN program. So I was HHA and NA students fitting into our BM program. So it's like we bring it in the students and purposely, and then moving them and upward, and then we transition to RN program. But we don't have RN program, we've finished in LVN.
And I already explained in the next, so what we offer. To become an LVN coming into BM program, all these students in HHA, they have to take a prerequisites. We offer 12 prerequisites. They only need to take up five of them, about 12 classes available. So all those has to be in Canvas and it used to be in Moodle.
So each of those courses holds the students between 30 to 50 students signing up, so that's a lot of students with going through. So I mean, am I be able to handle all those students just pay for constantly? I didn't think that was fair enough. So as you can see me, I come from other country, I came here in America about 35 years ago and didn't speak English. And I went to adult education and I learned English.
And then I move on and I become an optician. And then after I become an optician and then I went back to school and I become an RN. So I went back and then when I went to the same school where I learned English and they were stuck in 35 years ago, the way they've been teaching, and they never moved.
They're still paper and pencil. That made me to think maybe I'm in the right place, maybe I can change because when I wasn't an optician and those optical field, it was all those-- sales order was in written form. And then I just get an idea that sales no longer should be handwritten and hand holder.
And then I wrap it up with the frame, send it up, which they carry a comes, pick up my order, and then send it up to, I think, at the time down LA area, Orange County. They manufacture their class, ship it out overnight. It could be sometimes one week to two week to get the classes.
So I started a token to own a ship to change this system and so we can enter in a computer. Those days already started here and this is what we're talking about 1995 between 2000. So the owners started adopting this computer, they computerized. So I help them one company to moving paper to computer. So I had that experience. So that somebody heard, they may need to come in either one of the doctor's office, can you integrate that?
So I created with the IT guys and we had a doctor's office converted. And after that and I become a nurse. And here I become a five years experience and then I went back in same school where I got English. And then I started looking at it's like no way, I'm going to change this school this all paper, they were using Scantron at the time, I think a number two pencil to give the test.
So I said, if I can get rid of that Scantron test, I'm already successful. That was all I headed in my mind. That's why I started it doing the Moodle because I moved all those tests the bank into Moodle and that was an idea. But then I started a teaching and then it's so much easier to moving all my teaching materials, syllabus, and curriculum moving into Moodle it, becomes a very convenient.
So I started suggesting other teachers, let me set it up. I will just do the test the bank syllabus of loading and then you're teaching material be uploaded in the Moodle. So that's how we're using almost 100 up to 89 subjects. I created a classroom and the completed Moodle. We use a '17, '18, '19, and '20, '21. For five years we were very, very comfortable using back then.
I mean, I was very comfortable with the Moodle and I did not want to move to Canvas, but unfortunately, I heard Marjorie was Italian. Oh, you know what? By the way, you wanted to create more, but we are going to go for the Canvas. That was a bad news for me, but it's never bad news.
I just want to share that the Chinese proverb, it said, a journey of 1,000 miles begins with one step. I mean, I never use the Canvas and I just keep myself very positive. OK, now I can go for the newer LMS, so how am I going to do it? So luckily the person who helped me to create the Moodle and she was still with us, she wanted to retire. At least, as far as I know, last 10 years she wants to retire, but everybody grabbing her because she is the one with the IT, so just want to use her.
So she is a CTE business section teacher. So she started when I found out that the Moodle is going to be sunsetting and then a Canvas is going. And so we started April 21 free Canvas. We had no clue how they're going to roll out the Canvas, but this person started doing the Canvas for freebie to testing out whether it is going to work or we can migrate this all the section to Canvas.
So this, Lila Young, started doing the migration things. But I just explain those how I-- let me see. Did I miss any? No. So on here at the beginning, so we didn't just adopt the Canvas right away because we know it needed some step to take it. So very first even though all our teachers familiar using Moodle, a Canvas for me, even when I opened it, it was shocking, it's way different than Moodle.
I thought Moodle was much easier to use, but the Canvas has a one more step to you have to do things. So as I became administrator and I wasn't using Canvas not as much. But I was able to work with Lila and she and I discussed how can we assess these teachers a level of computer knowledge even though we have them?
But some of the teachers, we really have them like a 90% setting up all those courses, except they can open the quiz, they can upload the syllabus, that's about it, but the all other problems that there's always a resources nurse, teacher and/or I was available to help them and runs all this Moodle.
So when we started a Canvas, we did this background check. What we did it is have teachers by using them SurveyMonkey, teachers to do their self-assessment types, how they can do and learn better. So we did that and then the results indicated a lot of people wants to have a one on one section. So we created one on one section.
And they like to have handouts, so we create the handout. And then the handout it shows us step by step training. And then that wasn't even enough, yeah.

Chun Hee McMahon: We did it in person. By then our school started opening. So yes, we did it in the very first couple of sessions actually in person. And then we did it as needed, we did also combined. So we did a Zoom because thank goodness, we had a Moodle was available. So we could be able to link all the Zoom link into our Canvas, not the Canvas, Moodle, so we were able to utilize those material readily and without creating a whole lot of things.
And then all those step by step teaching, we actually repeated if that teacher needed more than one training times. And then, of course, we have terminology experience, a lot of computer terminologies. To teachers, it becomes very like difficult. So we made that available as well.
And so when the business section of the Canvas, they practiced it in the freebies and then we petitioned to our administrators to buy the Canvas. So we have to purchase it. So now Canvas has the purchase, you know that, right? So by the units, and with all that negotiated, so we know we're going to use it definitely Canvas.
So now we moved so freely, we just tossed it out and we moved to licensed Canvas, very first the business started. And then the last year we tested out, we train the teachers about four different sessions, and then we help them to creating these courses. And those step by step, this is Elaine and she will explain because as I move up to director of nursing and she took over my position and she become a resource teacher.
So she started helping teachers to creating courses and moving forward. So official our Canvas LMS started and then up was June and July, that's actually during the summer vacation and then by the time September came, and with all the classes moved into there. So I'm going to share what Elaine, how she took that.

- Hey. My name is Elaine Sims and I'm going to be talking to you about the timeline or transitioning from Moodle to Canvas, which actually we had found out that we were going to be utilizing Canvas. We didn't have a whole lot of time for training and actually on our Canvas we are still continuing to train our instructor just to be the best that they can using Canvas and that's part of our project here with DN.
So it took us about two months just to get up and going. And so you can see the timeline here. So June, July of last year 2022 I became the new role as Canvas administrator along with Junie McMahon. And with that role, I was really trying just to grasp what I needed to do in that role, what I needed to learn. I felt like I needed to be a step ahead from the instructor so that I could help them and I could support them.
We did start our initial Canvas trainings for the instructors in June and we had some that carried over to July. And then August 2022, we continued with additional trainings for the instructors. And we were pressed for time because our cohort 1846 in the nursing program, they were starting segment two of the program.
And so all of those courses, we already had planned for them to start on Canvas and that was anywhere between three courses, three clinicals, and throughout three rotations. And so it was a lot of courses that we had to get going in August and just with the trainings that we had.
In September 2022, we had a brand new cohort that was starting fundamentals 8047. And then October 2022 we had another cohort 1845 starting segment three of the nursing program, which is the last segment of the program.
And again, that was three to four theory classes, three clinicals, over three rotations, and so it was a lot that we had to make sure we were ready for. And then as you know, December 31, 2022, Moodle ended with OTAN.

Chun Hee McMahon: Yeah. So we were started away year before, but then next year when it ended and it was smooth transition, we were really ready. So next to one how we did and she's continued explaining it.

- We started off with face-to-face instructor trainings. And these trainings were coordinated by Lila Young in 2018 2020 graduate. And actually I went to Lila lot just through what I was trying to learn as an admin and she helped me tremendously.
So our trainings just start off on our Canvas, they were all face-to-face, these three trainings that Lila did for us. The first training session was focused more on Canvas from the student's point of view, which I think was excellent because as instructors, we need to know what the student see, how to upload an assignment, you have to troubleshoot and help the student troubleshoot when they're having problems.
And so the first thing that Lila did is she enrolled us all in a course called, Canvas student orientation, that she found from Canvas comments, which is very helpful. It taught us how to complete a text entry assignment. We took quizzes, so that we knew what the student would be seeing when they take a quiz and the different formatted questions.
We learn how to submit an assignment and we also learn how to send a message to the teacher. And so all of those were very important. And even the first training session, so it was overwhelming for the instructors, even for myself just because it was something new we were just, so used to using Moodle. And so it was definitely-- it had its challenges.
But then we went on to training session number two. And with training session number two we learn how to actually migrate a course from Moodle to Canvas. And we had many, many courses that we used Moodle for. And so each instructor, the courses that they would teach you on Moodle, they learn how to do that migration.
And so first of all, we learn how to do a Moodle, excuse me, course backup file, which most of us already knew how to do that because we would backup our courses on Moodle when a course ended. And so we did that and then through that we learned the steps on how to incorporate into a Canvas course template.
Now, the course template that was something new for us. And I was like, well, what is a template? What is quite understanding? And so just learning the concept of that. And so all of our courses, we were able to go ahead and migrate from Moodle, doing the backup file, and they were all put into our course template.
The one thing that Lila did for all of us instructors is that she really had the course templates ready to go for us. And so that was very helpful and later on, of course, I learned how to create those templates and assign them to the instructors.
Our third session with Lila is that we have learned to copy a Canvas course shell from the templates. And so we had our course shells that, again, Lila had already set up for us. And so from our shell, we were able to copy our course with our template into our shell.
And again, those were steps that were initially confusing, but within time, of course, it got easier and easier. And then also with that last session, we also learned how to navigate through the modules. And so with that uploading a file, creating a page, having the assignment, everything that has to do with the modules is what we learned there.
And then she also touched base about having a Sandbox course. And so I did create some Sandbox courses for some of the instructors and that was also very helpful for me because I was able to go into my Sandbox. And just like a Sandbox just play around in there and it wasn't intimidating. And I tell the instructors, now, use your Sandbox. If you're not quite sure what somebody's going to look like, or how to use the Sandbox, that is what it's there for and it was very, very helpful through those trainings. [end playback]
Chun Hee McMahon: So Sandbox, you got it, what it does, yes. That would be the one thing we do. And how do you do it?

- We then moved on to online Canvas trainings. These trainings were coordinated by our very own Marjorie Olivares. We're very thankful and grateful to you, Marjorie. These trainings were set up last July and went to August. Remember, we had a goal of utilizing Canvas starting with classes that we're starting in August of 2022.
So the first training session, which each training session, these were fantastic because these were presented by Canvas expert trainers and it really did help us. The face-to-face gave us a little bit knowledge of what Canvas was about. But these trainings here, it really dug way deeper.
And for the first session, we talked about was modules and communication, that's what we're learning. We learn how to set up a module. We learn how to set prerequisite for the module, and set requirements for the module, how to love the module. We learn how to upload assignments, a page. All of those things that you do within a module, we're very, very helpful.
The communication side of it, we learn how to post an announcement, we learn how to use discussions, we also learn how to utilize the inbox and email students, how to email a whole class versus just emailing one or two students. So very, very helpful training session number one.
Training session number two was all about the assignment. And one thing that was very helpful throughout all four of these sessions is that we would have our own Canvas course open. And so the trainer would teach us something and then give us some time to have the hands-on, which was excellent. And then of course, there was always time for Q&A. So if you had any type of questions, we were able to ask those questions. So it's really, really good.
Training session number two focused on assignments. And so with the assignments we learned about the assignment groups and how to do that and add weights to the assignment group to set up the grade book, which is very helpful. We learned about the rubrics and how to use the rubrics, touch base a little bit on speed grader as well, and so that was really good.
Training session number three was new quizzes and item bakes. And so I know that there's classic quizzes and the new quizzes was something that was new. And so right away I just wanted to learn about the new quizzes and I wanted the instructors to learn about the new quizzes that way we're going to have to go back and forth learning classic initially and then go into new quizzes.
I just like the way you're able to build the questions and something that we needed to learn anyway, so we learned it right away. We also learned about item base and how to do an QTI import from a publisher from the text, and that was helpful as well. And we also learn as you're adding your questions, how to add the question to the item base, So it's very, very good, and different formatting of questions as far as like the multiple choice, multiple response, hotspots, so just a different formats that we also learned.
At training session number four, our last training session was actually August 11 of 2022 and literally a week later is when we started our new courses for that new cohort 1846. And so we had to be ready to go. And so our last training session on August 11 was all about rating and feedback, touch a lot more heavier on the speed grader, and also on the rubrics, again, how to manually enter grades. We talked about the annotation tools and how that work that you reassigning assignments.
So all of these sessions were very, very helpful and yeah, we were ready to go. I was excited that once 1846 started that segment two, all the instructors, they were ready to go on their Canvas.

Chun Hee McMahon: So we did a face four-session and then online four sessions.
Audience: How long did that take?
Chun Hee McMahon: We know the tension, Spence, so we never went more than three hours, but always a couple of hours, two to three hours in between. And the face-to-face, if they already learned, we let them go. So I'm going to have two if they're already got it and we just moved on. So here a few item that she show you how she did--

- So our learners for our project goal is our nursing instructors. And our goal is that all nursing instructors will be able to use Canvas and other technological resources to its full potential. So as a team, we decided to create a digital classroom for our instructors and we named it all things Canvas, and this is what you are seeing right now.
And on here we have just general resources for when we are hiring a new instructor, just some important things that they need to know. We also have our handbooks here for our Canvas for our three program vocational nursing and nursing assistant home health aide.
We also have our board of vocational nursing, all our curriculum instructional plans that we are required to follow here and we have the Canvas resources. And what I created here is Canvas video library. And I chose videos that I felt that these directors really need to know as far as those early stages of setting up a Canvas course now that you have access to all of the library just by clicking here.
But as you can see, I added about 12 videos here in regards to what I felt was the most important that instructors needed to know to start their Canvas building it up.

Chun Hee McMahon: So just basically that we customize our teaching materials to--

- Also within the Canvas module is a step by step instructor guide. And again, I went over to Canvas resources and I chose some guides that I felt are going to be the most useful for our instructors. And again, they also have full access to all of the instructor guides just by clicking here and it directs them to the table of contents.
And then also I here have a question, I asked the Canvas community. So I felt like if they have a question, all they have to do is click on the word here, this logo in Canvas and it directly takes them over to the Canvas community and they can ask whatever question that they may have.
And then just some other technological resources that they need to know to be an instructor on our Canvas. This is Assessment Technology Institute, ATI resources. How to create an account, a quick faculty quick start video, how to be a champion.
We use the publisher FA Davis. And so I created a module with some resources to help them to create that account, how to gain their access, also within FA Davis, and Davis Edge resources along with Davis advantage.
And so right now our team, we are brainstorming and we are adding to this digital course. And the whole goal is that we want our instructors to be comfortable with using technology, we want our instructors to know where to go to find resources. So if they are at home and they're working on their course, they can go directly to this Canvas digital course and they can find helpful resources.
So we're still building on it, but this is pretty much our whole goal for us as a team to help our instructors to just be Canvas experts, it's what we want for them. And it's really exciting and it's going to be so helpful because as we hire new instructors I can just add them to this course as a student, and they can just have everything there at their fingertips, and not be intimidated, and know that I'm there to help them, to support them along with the rest of the team.
And so this is a work in progress and this is what we have started so far. And so I'm very, very pleased with that. And I'm excited these the next throughout this DLAC program within the next two years, how this courses is going to have so much more for the instructors. And so we're very, very excited about this digital classroom for the instructors.

- In the transition from Canvas from our two leaders, I would like to share the preliminary end results of a digital classroom. Here I have the template of my mental health class. I personally set up all my Canvas classrooms in a similar way. So the students are familiar with where I put things.
The very first module here is where I provide reference guides, they have access to the practice for school handbook, a list of nursing diagnosis, a guide for troubleshooting ATA, which is a program that the students access frequently, and the syllabus. Subsequent modules are daily classes.
I load all PowerPoint, activities, and assignments, and exams by day for the students to access. I am a paper free classroom at this point with all assignments and exams taken and submitted through Canvas. I just have students upload reports or transfer grades from other programs we use to keep my grade book up to date at all times.
Other programs we use include practice question bags from our test book publisher and ATA, which is our partner for testing and other activities aimed towards in-class prep. I also have a module here at the bottom of my class to collect all makeup assignments and for students to submit their remediation forms.
This is not applicable to all students, but having this submission here helps me to keep all documents for my class in one place for quick reference. The final module I have is for our board of vocational nurses compliance and it remains hidden from students. It holds my course description learning objectives instructional plan and daily lesson plans.

Chun Hee McMahon: So the final that I just suggest to you to use this LMS because you're going to pay for free, everything will be in the Canvas, and you can grade it there. So my at the very final afterthought is our journey continues.
But I want to just quote Zig Ziglar-- Zig Ziglar, he's an educator. "Surround yourself with those who see greatness in you, even when you don't see it in yourself." And I didn't see it, how I can move these things and I feel like I moved the mountains.
So the OTAN is in visual what I can see and they see those things and let me know. So I think you're in the right place. So next time when I see you maybe you're already adopting the Canvas.
